SilverEtch™
A New Approach to
Texturing Metal Clay
Traditionally,
adding texture to metal clay was achieved by
either rolling the clay into a mould or texture sheet or finding a
suitable
material such as lace, wallpaper, stone etc from which to transfer the
surface
texture.
The designs using this
process
are limited and another method of adding texture was sought by metal
clay and
jewellery distributor Art Clay Supplies Ltd of Reading.

The
solution was found in
‘SilverEtch’™,
a new process designed by Art Clay Supplies Ltd. Unlike
anything else currently available on the
jewellery market and such is the versatility of the process, the number
of
design possibilities are almost limitless. And
on the horizon there is even the prospect of producing
customer’s
own bespoke designs for adding to metal clay!
SilverEtch™
consists of a pre-printed acetate sheet with a transferable design that
is
imprinted onto the silver before firing. Once
fired a delicate etched pattern is transferred onto
the material,
without the deep imprint left by a texture sheet. This
gives the silver an oxidised appearance as
if it has had a patina applied to it. The
results are long-lasting and can safely be burnished,
tumbled, and
polished!
Eleven
different
SilverEtch designs are available as separate 40cm x 25cm sheets and two
early
customer favourites are ‘Cheetah Print’ and
‘Dotty
Swirls’.
A pre-packaged
selection of
five randomly
chosen sheets in a starter kit with instructions are also available. And
because not everyone will have the basic
tools required to prepare the metal clay, also available is a
SilverEtch™ kit
with everything you need to shape and finish your own
SilverEtch™
jewellery.
SilverEtch™
is also suitable for use on resin clay, self-hardening synthetic clay that combines the
features of clay
with epoxy.
This offers
the
additional advantage
of needing no firing, as it is prepared simply by mixing together two
clay-like
components in equal quantities.
The
result is a truly unique and flexible modelling clay that offers a one
hour
working time and sets hard in 24hours.
Like all
of
the products from Art Clay
Supplies
Ltd, it is easy to work with and
fun!
Workshops
are also available to learn this exciting new technique.
